The story begins on Mount Olympus as the Greek Gods prepare to host the Divine Olympic Games. As an international crowd of deities, heroes, villains, and folk characters from around the world attend the prestigious event, the unthinkable happens. For the first time in the history of the cosmos, a god has been murdered. In response, a group of four deities hailing from each of the four great continents join forces to investigate the attack. One of these gods, Poseidon, learns of a way to subdue the impending evil and must task a mortal with the perilous mission.

On the other side of the world, a teenager named Sebastian returns to his magicless seaside village after spending the summer with the Haida tribe in Canada. Despite his family's skepticism, Sebastian yearns to immerse himself in the world of myth and magic he witnessed during his time away. When tragedy strikes, Poseidon appears, offering him the ability to wield water magic—for a price. Sebastian must accept a quest to journey to every country in the world and gather the wisdom of the 195 sages. Thus begins his adventure through Central America, where he encounters local legends, historical figures and mythological creatures from the countries he visits along the way.

As the gods follow a lead to the Mayan pantheon and Sebastian gathers the wisdom of the Central American sages, a group of armor-clad foreigners arrives on the shores of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Hernán Cortés and his band of Spanish conquistadors have come to the New World, their hearts set on gold and glory. As they blaze a bloody path toward Tenochtitlán, Moctezuma II, ruler of the revered House of the Feathered Serpent, prepares for the impending confrontation. Aided by a mysterious spirit, Cortés becomes an unwitting pawn in a cosmic struggle where human ambition and divine forces collide.
